Northern Area Championships - Derwent Reservoir

29th - 30th April

39 boats made the long journey to Derwent Reservoir, Northumberland from as far away as Ireland and the Isle of Wight to take part in the 2006 FF Northerns.

Conditions were a race officer’s nightmare. On Saturday with the wind was from the North, and shifting through up to 90 degrees, though at least the wind was mostly around 5-10 mph. Sunday had almost no wind at all.

Race 1: The fleet got away with Nigel & Gavin Tullett tacking onto port from the pin end, proceeded to cross the fleet and were never headed. Given all the shifts, this was a most impressive performance. Neil Platt held second for most all the race, again coming out of the port end of the line.

Race 2: After the obligatory set of false starts, once more in fluky conditions, the start and first beat once more proved all important. Ian Linder led to the first mark, and held that lead for almost the whole race, only to be just caught by Charles Apthorp on the finish line, with the consistent Steve Goacher very close behind, giving him a slight lead at the end of day 1.

Despite all the chilli con carne for the evening meal, there was no wind to be found on Sunday, so racing was cancelled, leaving the results to stand from the 2 races of day 1. So Steve Goacher and Phil Evans are the current Northern Area FF Champions. In the closely fought Silver fleet honours went to Russ Clarke and Graham Massey of Dovestone SC, and the Classic prize was retained by Keith Jameson and Maf Smith of Bassenthwaite.

Broxbourne Classic

6th - 7th May

Light variable winds made for sometimes frustrating conditions during the Broxbourne Classic Flying Fifteen open meeting. The first race saw much place changing as the very light breeze switched direction from North to West and East. At the end Tim Tomlinson held off Simon Dangerfield for the win. In the second race conditions slightly improved giving a win to Bob Tait and Jerry Rogers after the wind switched from East to West. Everyone enjoyed the evening barbecue and soon forgot about the days frustrations.

Sunday dawned with a light northerly, or at least that is what the race officer apparently thought it should be as he sent the fleet off just as the wind flicked through ninety degrees. Graham Lamond in his vintage boat then proceeded to pull away only to be caught on the last lap by Tim Tomlinson who then promptly infringed, dropping to third after his turns. Any of three boats could have won at the start of the last race though Graham again demonstrated his mastery of the conditions with another fine win followed by Tim Tomlinson and Bob Tait. As to the form book for the next meeting at Llangorse, perhaps all that could be discerned was that my name is Bob is the most popular name for a helmsman with three entries.

Southerns at Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy

13th - 14th May

The Flying Fifteen class made its first visit to the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy for their 2006 Southern Area Championship. A strong fleet of 45 saw a mixture of boats, some familiar faces, and some new ones.

PRO Frank Newton and his team took the fleet out into Weymouth bay for Saturday's racing, and the fleet were rewarded with a solid breeze and surfing conditions off wind.

Race one saw the fleet champing at the bit, and with the tide pushing the fleet towards the line, this lead to an inevitable general recall. Line honours went to Jeremy Davy & Simon Childs from Northampton SC with Steve Goacher/Phil Evans (Royal Windermere) second and David McKee/Chris Hewkin (Dovestone) third. Honours in the Classic fleet went to Simon Dangerfield/David Hemmingway (Llangorse).

After a quick resetting of the course, race 2 was underway, and again the fleet was keen, leading to some competitors getting OCS'd. For the rest of the fleet, a shifty wind caught out those who went hard right, resulting in them overstanding the first mark, elsewhere close racing all the way around resulted in Goacher/Evans winning with Barry Parkin/Mark Darling (Hayling Island) second and Davy/Childs third. Once again Classic fleet honours went to Dangerfield/Hemmingway.

For the third race, the fleet switched to a windward/leeward course. Those competitors coming out of the leeward gate and going right tended to be those making gains. The eventual winners being Davy/Childs with McKee/Hewkin second and Parkin/Darling third. Dangerfield/Hemmingway completed a hat trick in the Classic fleet.

Sunday morning brought warm sunshine, but very little in the way of wind. Racing was moved to Portland Harbour. After a delay of half an hour the wind had filled in enough to get racing underway, and the fleet got away at the second attempt. Those who went hard right made big gains, with Mike Hart/Tim Hall (Port Dinorwic) leading Goacher/Evans and Tony Lee/Chris Hough (Derwent Reservoir) around the first mark. These three continued to lead until the run on the second lap. With the wind dying over much of the course, those a little further back were able to go hard left and sail around the flat patch, leading to a large raft at the final mark. Charles Apthorp/David Ricards (Hayling Island) emerged first from the pack to take the gun followed by Greg Wells/Andy Weatherspoon (Hayling Island) and Davy/Childs. In the Classics honours went to Ian and Gavin Shaw of Carsington.

Race 5 saw the return of a solid breeze, and the fleet were away at the second attempt. The tide on the weather mark caught some of the fleet out, leading to some large place changes in the pack. Line honours went to Goacher/Evans with Alan Bax/Paul Busby (Hayling Island) second and Parkin/Darling third. In the Classics, Dangerfield and Hemmingway returned to their winning ways.

After a closely sailed series, the eventual results saw Goacher/Evans and Davy/Childs tied on points, the tie break meant that Goacher/Evans took the title for the sixth time.

Draycote Water Sailing Club

20th/21st May 2006

Fifteen boats entered the Draycote Open on the weekend of the 20th/21st May, less than usual perhaps due to the weather forecast. The fleet was greeted by a cold and damp day, with the south westerly wind a constant force 4 gusting force 5.
The first race, which proved to be the windiest, got away to a clean start, with the fleet splitting on both sides of the beat. First to the windward mark, from the starboard side of the course, was Rupert Mander, crewed by Paul Busby, closely followed by Simon Patterson & Simon Thompson from the port side. These two proceeded to sail away from the fleet, but were closely matched, Rupert leading to the last windward mark. Simon managed to take the lead on the final run, taking the winning gun, followed by Rupert. Keith Snow & Geoff Huett took 3rd place. Further down the fleet FF 797, Graham Randall & Chris Smith and FF 2523 Bob Falconer & Rosie Winkle enjoyed a close race with FF 797 just beating FF 2523 to the finish line.

The second race saw the wind moderate, but the rain persisted. Again the fleet got away to a clean start. This time Rupert made sure of a victory, by leading from start to finish. Simon Patterson was second and Rodger Webb & Kevin Holliday finished third.

Sunday dawned, still raining, but the wind had moderated to a south easterly force 3. The third race again started cleanly with Rupert crewed by his father John Mander. Rupert soon forced himself to the front, however, Simon Patterson got away to a poor start. Graham Randall, in FF 797, sailed an excellent race holding second place throughout the race and holding off a charging Simon Patterson to the finish. Richard Hope & Pete Gough had shown well in this race until a broken main outhaul forced an early retirement.

After lunch, race four saw the wind freshening to a force 4, again a clean start from the fleet, with Rupert Mander and Simon Patterson establishing themselves at the head of the fleet. This was a very closely fought race with tacking duels on the beats, Rupert managed another win. Richard Hope & Pete Gough came through to take third.

One or two of the fleet decided not to contest the last race for various reasons, notably Rupert Mander and Graham Randall. A clean start saw Simon Patterson lead at the windward mark, closely pursued by Rodger Webb, Chris Avery and Matt Isherwood. Chris Avery took the lead on the first run, to be finally overhauled by Simon Patterson on the last lap. The finishing positions being Simon Patterson, Chris Avery and Rodger Webb.

A big thank you goes out to Race Officer Mike Burgoine and his team and Bob Cragg for getting the booze (A job he relishes).

Llangorse Sailing Club

20th - 21st May

A total of 19 boats (8 visitors) were met with a rather bleak and windy Llangorse Lake. There were 3 Open boats 3 Silver and 13 Classics. It was agreed to have 1 start.

The 1st race started in 12 to 15 knots of breeze with a number of boats spotting the port bias on the line. From this Simon Dangerfield FF 2663 established an early lead which he held for the whole race. Behind him there were a number of place changes especially on the beats with Tom Tomlinson FF 2443 battling past Roger Finch FF2658 with Scott Train 3362 and David Duke 3794 closing all the time but unable to stop the Classics having 1,2 3 in Race 1

The fleet for the 2nd race were a little eager resulting in a general recall. The OOD took the opportunity to change the course and reset the line. The restart had a few incidents resulting in penalty turns for some. Again there was some close racing with 4 boats battling for the lead. After the second lap David Duke established a lead which he held to the end. Behind him the final beat was very close with Roger Finch 2nd and Nick Taylor securing a hard worked 3rd place.

After the racing the competitor were well fed from a BBQ and some late Llangorse sunshine.

Sunday dawned even less inviting with gusts of 20 knots of breeze and heavy rain.

For Race 3 the fleet was sent on a testing beat to the South mark in the far corner of Llangorse Lake. This beat saw a couple of horizontal 15 caught by some big gusts, but no damage. The off wind legs gave good planing together with some crowded gybe marks. .The result was 3794 then 2443 and Colin Fletcher 2695 3rd.

After this race the Open and Silver results were clear but the Classic result would need to be decided on the last race between 2663, 2443 and 2658.

Race 4 saw the majority of the fleet made a good start but Tim Tomlinson 2443 made an excellent start to establish himself 1st at the windward mark From here he controlled the race holding his lead to the end and winning the Classic series.
Behind him there was again some close racing between the Classics Silver and Open fleet boats. David Duke was 2nd with Scott Train 3rd and Simon Dangerfield 4th.

Results Open Fleet FF 3794 David & Carole Duke
Silver FF 3362 Scott Train & Graham Lamond

Report from David Hemmingway

Cardiff Bay Yacht Club

3rd/4th June

The sun shone brightly in clear skies for the 16 boats that turned out for the Cardiff Bay Yacht Club Flying Fifteens Classic.

Despite high pressure and clear skies and a forecast of 5 knot wind, there was a F2 sometimes F3 in shifty conditions on the Saturday for the 2 scheduled races

In R1 the fleet was chomping at the bit and there were 2 general recalls and when finally the race started an OCS.

Leading at the windward mark was 2004 winner Simon Dangerfield who was also the 2003 FF Classic World champion, he was crewed by Dave Hemingway from Llangorse. They were hotly pursued around the windward mark by local sailors Duncan Baird/Tim Bowen.

Dangerfield/Hemingway managed to maintain their lead ahead of their rivals Roger Finch and Dennis Manning from Middle Nene who finished 2nd, in 3rd place was Colin Fletcher/Dave Travis from Llangorse.

In Race 2 the line honours went to Bob Tait/Robin Fletcher from Broxbourne who had an OCS in race one. 2nd was Colin Fletcher/ Dave Travis with Dangerfield/Hemingway 3rd.

Beer and BBQ was then welcomed by most sailors who made the most of the clubs extensive facilities.

Sunday morning saw the start of racing postponed as Cardiff Bay was like a looking glass. Cardiff Bay is formed from the barrage holding the waters of the river Taff and Ely and is therefore non-tidal and more or less fresh water. Fortunately the predicted wind appeared mid morning to eventually reach about F2 and a shorter course was set than the previous day.

Dangerfield/ Hemingway won the first race ahead of the consistent Finch/Manning. Baird/Bowen in a beautiful classic Chippendale 1155 took 3rd place.

The final race was won by Colin Fletcher/Dave Travis from Llangorse ahead of the consistent Finch/Manning with third place going to Brian turner/Jackie Burns.

Overall winner and picking up the Dragon trophy for the second time was 2003 Classic World champion Simon Dangerfield and Dave Hemingway from Llangorse.

In second place was Colin Fletcher/Dave Travis from Llangorse and in third place was Roger Finch and Dennis Manning from Middle Nene.

Report from Ian Horton

Royal Motor Yacht Club

1st - 2nd July

With temperatures in the 80’s and sea breezes giving a nice heel to the boat, the weather really turned it on for the Royal Motor Yacht Club’s open and classic regatta for Flying Fifteens.

Saturday’s races were set from the clubhouse starting line, and race officer Jane Latham set an Olympic style course around the harbour for the morning, and a similar course in the afternoon. Those competitors who were able to cope with the lumpy sea caused by so many powerboats fared better, and judicious use of the incoming tide benefited those quick enough to appreciate its help. In the evening competitors enjoyed an excellent barbeque on the club’s terrace watching the sun go down over the harbour.

On Sunday the start from a committee boat was delayed until the advent of the sea breeze just before midday. Race officer Bryan Drake again set an olympic style course using harbour marks, which ensured good racing and plenty of action.

In the silver fleet competition was particularly keen with a different winner in every race.
